Abstract

This study explored the lived experiences of non-specialized MAPEH (Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health) teachers and examined how resilience and adaptability enable them to effectively perform their teaching responsibilities despite instructional challenges. Using a qualitative phenomenological research design, the study involved nine non-specialized MAPEH teachers from selected public secondary schools in the Schools Division of Quirino, Philippines. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and observation notes, and were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns and meanings in participants’ experiences. Findings revealed that non-specialized MAPEH teachers faced significant challenges, including limited content mastery, inadequate technical skills, classroom management difficulties, insufficient instructional resources, and time constraints. Despite these challenges, participants demonstrated resilience through their commitment to continuous learning, self-improvement, and professional growth. They actively sought training opportunities, used digital and multimedia resources, collaborated with colleagues, and adopted flexible teaching strategies to address diverse learner needs and classroom contexts. Their adaptability was evident in their ability to adapt instructional approaches, maximize available resources, and maintain positive learning environments despite limited subject-matter specialization. The study further highlighted the importance of institutional support, professional development programs, mentoring initiatives, and access to instructional resources in strengthening teachers’ competence and confidence. Based on the findings, a comprehensive training design was proposed to enhance the pedagogical skills, resilience, and adaptability of non-specialized MAPEH teachers. The study concludes that resilience and adaptability are essential attributes enabling non-specialized educators to overcome professional challenges and deliver meaningful learning experiences, ultimately improving teaching effectiveness and student learning outcomes in MAPEH education.
